Gareth Ainsworth landed one of the EFL’s most prolific goalscorers in recent times - former Peterborough and Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith in August 2017.

Mackail-Smith arrived on a free transfer after leaving Luton Town in the summer of 2017, having finished the 16/17 season on loan at Peterborough where he scored five times in his third spell with the club.

His career took off at Dagenham & Redbridge and he then won three promotions during an explosive spell with Peterborough, netting 35 goals in the 2010/11 season alone to clinch the League One Player of the Year prize.

He switched to Brighton that summer in a deal worth an initial £2.5million and spent four years in the Championship, winning seven caps for the Scottish national side, scoring once.

The striker then switched to Luton, but a broken leg hindered his progress with the Hatters and he was allowed to leave in May as part of a squad restructure.

Mackail-Smith scored 10 goals in his first season at Adams Park, including a hat-trick in a 4-0 home win over Crawley Town in November. CMS signed a new two-year deal in May 2018, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2020.

After making 25 appearances in the first half of the 2018/19 season, scoring three times for Wanderers, Mackail-Smith moved to Sky Bet League Two side Notts County on loan in January until the end of the campaign in the hope of regular first team action.
