Stewart was rewarded with his first professional contract in 2011 after a string of excellent performances for the club’s Under 18s, guiding them to victory in the Youth Alliance Cup.
He made his professional debut in the 3-2 defeat at Preston North End in January 2012 and developed a knack for scoring important goals, playing his part in the club's survival from relegation in 2014.
The defender left the club that summer and played 10 times for Crewe Alexandra before returning to Adams Park in July 2015 on a two-year deal, scoring on his second debut in the 3-0 win over York City before missing three months through injury.
The centre-half formed a formidable partnership at the back with Aaron Pierre maintaining a solid defensive record throughout the 2015/16 season, having the second best record in League Two that year, and would earn an extension to his contract at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, having excelled throughout the season.
2017/18 was cut short for the defender due to a calf injury in late December, making 21 appearances before that time; scoring once and keeping eight clean sheets in all competitions, whilst also passing a milestone of 150 appearances for the club in November.
