A Ross Stewart hattrick wasn’t enough for the visitors as goals from Anis Mehmeti, Sam Vokes and Joe Jacobson gave Wycombe a deserved point at home.
Gareth Ainsworth made one change from the team that won at The Valley on New Year’s Day, with Anthony Stewart replacing Jason McCarthy.
Sunderland came out of the blocks firing and scored the opening goal after just two minutes. A Dennis Cirkin cross was headed onto the underside of the crossbar by the lethal Ross Stewart, and as the ball bounced up, it hit David Stockdale and crossed the line.
Despite the less than ideal start, Wycombe found the equaliser only five minutes later. Anis Mehmeti was fed the ball on the edge of the area, jinked infield and fired a precise effort past Patterson into the bottom corner.
Ten minutes before the break, Wycombe were then able to take the lead. Garath McCleary’s corner was unconvincingly headed up by Ross Stewart and as the ball dropped, Vokes beat the keeper by nudging a header into the net for his eighth of the season.
The drama continued into the dying minutes of the first half, as the Black Cats levelled the score. Elliot Embleton fizzed in a low cross and Ross Stewart beat his man to nick it past Stockdale on the stroke of half-time.
Half-time: Wycombe 2-2 Sunderland
The second-half promised even more drama as only two minutes in, Corry Evans raced through on goal for the visitors, with Joe Jacobson making a superb tackle to deny what would have been a brilliant scoring opportunity.
Minutes later, Jacobson was involved in more defensive heroics. This time, it was a goal-line clearance to deny Stewart a hattrick as his header seemed destined to nestle in the bottom corner.
Following a long delay for what looked to be a nasty injury for visiting skipper Corry Evans, Embleton lined up another long-range effort but saw this effort beaten away by a flying Stockdale.
It was in the 92nd minute of play that Stewart snatched his hattrick for the visitors. The striker latched onto a long through ball from the midfield and managed to direct an effort just past Stockdale to put the visitors ahead.
As always at Adams Park however, there was to be more drama. A lofted McCleary corner was headed down by December Player of the Month Chris Forino for captain Jacobson to cap off a fantastic performance with a last minute equaliser.
