Report: Women's first team fall in tough season opener

Newly promoted Eastleigh prove too much to handle for Chairgirls.

12 September 2021

The women's first team opened their 2021/22 season by welcoming a newly promoted Eastleigh side to Buckinghamshire College Group.

The opening minute of the game saw Wycombe string together a very slick passing movement that resulted in a cross being claimed by the visitor’s goalkeeper. Whilst this was an encouraging start from the hosts, it didn’t take long for the gloss of a bright afternoon to be quickly tarnished. On 5 minutes, an error by Amy Leach allowed Sarah Bradshaw to bear down on goal and comfortably finish past Amy Whale.

Eastleigh began to control the middle third where the Chairgirls central 3 of Sam Jackson, Sarah Harrison and Taya McCalmon were often overrun by the energetic and quick, accurate passing and movement of the visitors. The back 4 plus Whale soaked up the pressure and repelled the majority of attacks before they came of anything with Whale relatively untroubled. The closest to a goal for the hosts came when a Jackson free kick flew narrowly over the bar. The same player sadly, limped off after a collision with an Eastleigh defender on 41 minutes to be replaced by the youngster, Kiyana Fryer.

The second half saw a reshuffling of the pack for the Chairgirls with the move of Bobby Lynch into midfield and instantly she made a positive impact, reducing the number of times where Eastleigh were able to thread passes beyond the host’s midfield. A change in formation for the hosts also helped steady the ship defensively but attacking ideas were lacking although Harrison went close with a strike from range and a free kick from Lynch caused some distress for the visitors back line when a scramble in the box was cleared in desperation by an Eastleigh defender. Lynch later struck with a good effort but found the visiting keeper, Lucy Venables, equal to it.

On 82 minutes, any hopes of forcing a draw were wiped out when Bradshaw struck again with a well-placed shot into the left side of the goal to make the score 2-0 on the day.

A tough start to the new season for the Chairgirls but plenty more games lie ahead starting with the trip to highly rated Abingdon United next Sunday with a 2pm kick off.
