Report: Fleetwood 3-3 Wycombe

Thrilling game ends all square.

30 October 2021

Wycombe had to settle for a high-scoring draw against Fleetwood after going two goals up in an end-to-end encounter at the Highbury Stadium.

The Cod Army took an early lead through Danny Andrew, but the Chairboys fought back to lead at the break thanks to goals from Brandon Hanlan and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Sam Vokes made it three early into the second half, but Fleetwood found second wind to bring the game back to level terms in quick succession through Joe Garner and Shayden Morris.

Surviving late pressure from the hosts, Gareth Ainsworth’s men kept hold of the point to round off a frantic 90 minutes in Lancashire.

The Blues controlled the ball well in the opening stages, but a Fleetwood counter-attack proved to be clinical as Danny Andrew fired the ball hard and low past David Stockdale after some tidy work from Callum Morton.

It wasn’t long after that Akinfenwa had the ball at his feet and poised to make it two, but he couldn’t get it out from under his feet after a flicked on header from Ryan Tafazolli.

Vokes lined up to take aim after good work from Daryl Horgan, but a Fleetwood man did well to come across and put in a block.

Hanlan was the brightest spark in the opening exchanges for the Chairboys, and used his body brilliantly to roll past the defender in his way, finding composure to then calmly slot home the equaliser.

And Wycombe only had to wait six minutes to knock themselves in front. Akinfenwa made amends for his earlier chance and made no mistake with this chance, using his strength too to bring the ball into his path and prod in a sweet finish past Alex Cairns.

Wycombe kept coming at the Cod Army in search of a third before the interval, managing six corners and looking strong in the air. Fleetwood had the possession at home, but the away side were looking the more threatening outfit.

The Chairboys made it three quickly into the second half, as Hanlan swept the ball into Vokes after some clever play down the right to get to the byline, and the Welshman was quick on the act to tap in with a deft flick.

Fleetwood had a goal back just before the hour mark, with Joe Garner’s glanced header getting the better of Stockdale to bring the Cod Army back into the game.

Five minutes later, Shayden Morris fired an equaliser with a driven effort after good work down the right flank, unravelling the Chairboys’ two goal advantage.

Tafazolli had to produce a piece of heroic defending to deny the home side from taking the lead, heading the ball off the line as Stockdale looked beaten.

Fleetwood kept piling on the pressure, with our no.13 called into action to keep out a well struck effort, before a late flurry from Wycombe failed to provide the winner, as the Chairboys take a point going into Tuesday night’s tie with Ipswich.
