Report: Women's U18s march on to Cup semi-final

The Chairgirls remain composed to win penalty shootout and advance.

22 November 2021

On a crisp Saturday morning, the Chairgirls travelled afar to tackle their sternest opponents yet,  Stanford in the Vale, in the second round of the Berks and Bucks Cup.

We knew the team awaiting our arrival hadn’t lost in over two seasons and that it would take a strong performance following our league setback last Saturday, which ended in disappointment against league leaders, Abingdon.

Despite the pitch doing its upmost to ruin the spectacle, both teams set about trying to play football, and the Chairgirls suffered from an unfortunate bounce which the Stanford right midfielder latched onto the ball wide right, and her intended cross looped over Soph Carter, the Chairgirls’ keeper, and into the net at the far post.

The Chairgirls battled on and rallied, and with 30 minutes on the clock, Jess Gomes produced a well-timed run onto a bouncing midfield through ball, lobbed the emerging keeper and the Chairgirls deservedly went in at half time one goal apiece.

Half time: Stanford-in-the-Vale 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

The teams resumed the second half in similar fashion and the Chairgirls knew this result was very much within their grasp.

It was very hard to separate the teams, they were very evenly balanced throughout the second half, with end-to-end action - and yet goal-scoring opportunities were very hard to come by, as both defences were generally on top.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, the Stanford striker was through on goal after a rare defensive error, and Chloe Mackay (Player of the Match) intercepted the ball with a magnificently timed sliding tackle to send the ball away from danger.

The Chairgirls become more composed and took control of the last five minutes, with several corners but they were unable to convert. Naomi Tilley was put through on goal to seal the match for the Blues but the Stanford keeper had other ideas and pulled off a wonderful last-minute save, pushing the ball just past the post to take the match into penalties.

The Chairgirls’ brave penalty-takers were Char Hill, Ruby Paish, Molly Carter, Amelia Sage and Jess Fuller, who all had great strikes. Meanwhile, Soph Carter pulled off a wonderful save with a strong left hand to deny Stanford.

Full time: Stanford-in-the-Vale 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers (Wycombe win 3-4 on penalties)

So, the Chairgirls march on, with a 2-4 win on penalties and a trip to the semi-finals.
