The young Chairgirls were looking forward to Women’s Football Weekend with a top of the table away clash to the unbeaten Abingdon Town.
This was always going to be a tough game and it did not start well for Wycombe. They allowed Abingdon to dominate the first 20 minutes, giving them too much space and time on the ball. The result was three quick goals for the home team and a mountain to climb for Wycombe.
However, this team is resilient, they have come back from worse before, and there was still much positivity among the team that they could do so again. The fight back started with a goal from Jess Fuller just before half time.
Half time: Abingdon Town 3-1 Wycombe Wanderers
The half time team talk rallied the players and Wycombe started strong. A powerful shot from Brooke Sanders pulled it back to 3-2 early on. The large crowed of visiting supporters started to chant and were urging the Chairgirls forward.
Abingdon were well organised, kept their composure and took a two-goal lead again with a scrappy goal. 4-2.
Wycombe battled on. Naomi Tilley struck the ball, the keeper made a great save but Molly Carter was there to tap in Wycombe’s third. 4-3. Optimism was growing, the draw was in Wycombe’s grasp and they thought they had levelled, only for Ruby Paish’s shot to go just over the bar.
The Wycombe goalkeeper, Sophie Carter, made a couple of amazing saves, keeping the game alive but it was just not meant to be. Abingdon sealed the win with a late goal.
