Gareth: We'll need to be at our best

Boss in buoyant mood ahead of Home Park trip.

23 November 2021

Gareth Ainsworth says his Chairboys side head to Home Park with confidence for tonight's League 1 encounter with Plymouth Argyle, but concedes this might be the toughest battle yet with the Pilgrims (k.o. 7.45pm).

Wanderers have won five and drawn two of the seven trips to Argyle during Ainsworth's tenure as Blues boss, but the Devon side are unbeaten at home all season, sitting top of the table and having lost just twice all term, including a 2-0 setback at Charlton on Saturday.

“We’ve had some good results down there down the years, but they’ve always been tight games and it’s a really tough place to go," he said. "Their fans get right behind them, there’s always a big atmosphere and we’ll need to be at our best to get anything.

“(Manager) Ryan Lowe has done a fantastic job there and they deserve to be where they are in the table. We’ve watched a lot of them this season and they’re extremely hard to beat, as they’ve shown. They score a lot of goals, they create a lot, but we’re going there with a lot of confidence after the way we’ve been playing lately and getting that win against Bolton on Saturday.

“It’s a long way for our fans to travel on a cold Tuesday night and I’m so grateful to each and every one of them that’s making the trip. I know there’ll be a lot more watching at home on iFollow and we’ll be giving everything to come away with a good result and keep momentum going in this strong season that we’re having.

“I was really pleased with the boys on Saturday; we kept our composure, even after missing a penalty. Nobody’s head went down, we just kept going, kept to our plan, got our goal and dug in to make sure we got the win. There’s been a great buzz around the training ground and I’m really proud to see this spirit that we have."
