Gareth Ainsworth says he’s more excited than ever to lead his side into a new season, because of the return of fans to Adams Park for the 2021/22 campaign.
The Blues boss saw his side battle valiantly without their 12th man for almost the entirety of their first ever Championship season, and believes his squad will have what it takes to mount a challenge to return to the second tier.
“We’re going into a league that we’ve been trying to get into or stay in for 20 years, but now we’re falling into it rather than getting promoted into it,” he said.
“It’s brilliant that people might see us as a top-end League 1 or Championship side because that’s what I see this club as. Rob (Couhig, chairman) is investing into the training ground and looking at new venues, the stadium is going to be much more modern, and I’m going to have the best squad I’ve had in my tenure.
“It will be tough in League 1, without a shadow of a doubt. There are still clubs at this level who will spend bundles of money. But let me do things my way. I know what we can achieve.
“I’m really looking forward to next season, mainly because the fans are coming back. I can’t wait to welcome them back here.
“Once those fans walk through the door on the first league game of the season, I want to get that place rocking. I want to deliver Championship football again to all those people who’ve supported us through League 2, League 1 and nearly the non-leagues.
“I’m going to work so hard to make that happen. We’ve got great staff, a great squad, and most importantly, great fans.”
