Gareth Ainsworth has agreed to bring Josh Scowen back to Adams Park on a two-year deal, Wycombe Wanderers are delighted to announce.
The 28-year-old progressed through the Chairboys’ academy into the first team, making his EFL debut two days before his 18th birthday, and returns to the club on a free transfer after leaving Sunderland at the end of his contract.
Ainsworth said: “Josh is a player with real Championship pedigree and that’s exactly what we’re looking for here, so I’m delighted to bring him back. I was a big admirer of his when I saw him playing in our youth team all those years ago, and it’s been no surprise that he’s made his way up the ladder and spent much of his career in the Championship.
“Wycombe fans will remember Josh as being a real battler in midfield, someone who can win the ball and make things happen for us going forward, and he will play a big part in our efforts to have another successful season.
“There are more signings in the pipeline but it’s great to get this one over the line in time for the start of pre-season training on Thursday, and I’m excited to see him back in the light and dark blue quarters.”
One of Ainsworth’s first success stories as a manager, Scowen was on loan with Eastbourne Borough in non-league before being recalled once Ainsworth was appointed caretaker manager in 2012, going on to play a formidable part in the engine room of the Wanderers’ midfield, earning a move to League 1 side Barnsley in 2015.
The Tykes won promotion and the EFL Trophy in his first season at the club, and Scowen switched to fellow Championship side Queens Park Rangers in 2017, playing more than 100 times for the West London outfit ahead of a switch to Sunderland in January 2020.
He played 51 times for the defeated play-off semi-finalists before departing the North-East in the summer, paving the way for his return to HP12.
