Dominic Gape says he’s been blown away by the improvements made to the training ground by a team of builders and volunteers, in readiness for the return of the squad to pre-season training at Marlow Road next week.
The midfielder has been a regular visitor to the facility over the summer months as he works hard to put an end to the persistent problems that plagued him throughout the 2020/21 campaign, but he’s been in good company with a group of volunteers who’ve been painting and renovating the building inside and out.
“I’ve never seen so much work going on,” Dominic said in a video interview on Tuesday. “There’s new pitches being laid outside and the volunteers have been relentless, working hard, which epitomises the club.
“A few of the boys have been popping in over the summer, and it’s been nice to have the volunteers around the place too. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone next week and seeing who’s got sun tans and who’s really been enjoying their summer!
“But I know all the boys are looking forward to getting back together and seeing what we can achieve this season.”
Gape made just 16 appearances in all competitions last term due to a series of different injuries which limited his opportunities in the Chairboys’ midfield, and says he hopes the hard work this summer will help him return to full strength when the new season gets underway:
“The club have opened up the training ground for me to come in and crack on, and the physios have been great with me,” he said. “I’ve been set a programme to give me the best chance of hitting pre-season hard, and I’ve enjoyed it.
“I’ve loved being part of the journey here, and last season although I wasn’t in the team as much as I’d have liked, I enjoyed being part of the squad and getting behind the boys.
“Seeing the fans back at the Euros and feeling the atmosphere has really got me excited for the new season and it will be awesome to get back to Adams Park and see the place rocking.”
