Ahead of the friendly against Leicester City last night, Sam Vokes was unveiled as Wycombe Wanderers’ new signing live on Sky Sports, who spoke to him on the pitch.
The Welsh international was excited to have put pen to paper on an initial one-year deal.
“I’m delighted, I can’t wait to get going. It’s great to be here in front of the fans and I’d have loved to have been playing tonight, if I’m totally honest with you. But it’s a little bit too early and I can’t wait to be back playing next week.”
Vokes was impressed by the atmosphere around the ground, and is looking forward to stepping out at Adams Park as soon as possible.
“It was a great welcome. I’ve played here a few times and it’s a great ground - a great place to play football. Like I said, I’m desperate to get going now! I’ve had a frustrating few years of football, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running next week.
“I’ve played against Wycombe a couple of times. The changing room’s brilliant. I’ve been in there a couple of times and the boys have been really welcoming - it seems like there’s a really great team spirit - it’ll be great to be a part of it.”
After a tough few seasons with Burnley and Stoke, Vokes made it clear that he wants to get his head down, play football and score goals.
“That’s exactly it. I’m desperate to get out on the grass and play football again after a frustrating couple of years where that wasn’t happening. I can’t wait!”
Chairboys fans were on hand to give Vokes a warm Wycombe welcome, which made the signing announcement even more special.
“It’s great to have fans back in the stadium - I’ve not played in front of fans for a long time now - this was actually the only place that I played in front of fans last year. I know the atmosphere that these fans can create - I’m sure we can have a good game tonight and then crack on to next week.”
