Gareth: We will fight for every point

Boss asks for repeat of second-half showing at Huddersfield when Derby come to town.

15 February 2021

Gareth Ainsworth was thrilled to see his side bite back after going two goals down at Huddersfield to collect their first victory of 2021 and kick-start their efforts to remain in the Championship against all odds.

Wanderers slipped to a 2-0 deficit for the third game running but this time were able to swing momentum in their favour, firstly through Anis Mehmeti’s classy finish just before half-time, and then with Joe Jacobson’s penalty and Josh Knight’s excellent strike in a dominant second-half showing in Yorkshire.

“I know a lot of people might have been thinking ‘here we go again’, but not me,” he said afterwards. “I asked the boys to fight and that’s exactly what they did.

“We deserve to be in this league and we will come out swinging in every game to stay here. Maybe we’ve lost a little bit of that mindset recently and I take full responsibility for that, but today we were awesome.

“We could have scored four or five. Their two goals were avoidable, but our boys played really well. They were brave, took the game to Huddersfield, and stopped their possession style.

“I’m really proud of that performance and result. We put a game plan in place and that was a true Wycombe performance.”

Next up comes the visit of Derby County to Adams Park on Tuesday night and Ainsworth just wants to see the same level of commitment and determination from his side, which he believes will be enough to complete the survival mission over the next two and a half months.

“We have nothing to fear,” he said. “I spoke to Rob (Couhig) in midweek and he’s of the same opinion as me. We want to be here, we deserve to be here, so let’s give everything we’ve got to stay here. We’re 10 points adrift, and that’s a tough ask, but there’s a lot of points to play for and it’s doable, of course it is.

“I have to credit Alex Samuel. Before the game, he told the boys in the changing room to write their own story this season. Nobody will believe it, but let’s go and do it.

“I’m looking forward to seeing that mentality, that focus, that aggressive way of playing in every game. If you do that, you get moments like this which make it all worthwhile, so let’s crack on and pick up another win on Tuesday.”
