Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers
Saturday 1st January 2022 (k.o. 3pm)
The Valley
Referee: Paul Howard

Wanderers kick off the New Year in the capital, hoping to celebrate a return to winning ways at the scene of one of their greatest all-time triumphs.

Charlton were a Premier League outfit when the League 2 Wanderers recorded a stunning 1-0 win in the quarter-final of the League Cup fifteen years ago, but the Addicks have held the upper hand since then, winning all three subsequent league meetings at The Valley.

Gareth Ainsworth's men picked up their first league win against Charlton back in September, when Garath McCleary's brace was enough to secure a 2-1 victory, and now Wycombe get back on the road hoping to right the wrongs of Wednesday's 1-0 loss at Ipswich - their first defeat in six.

Charlton too were defeated in their last game, going down 1-0 at Plymouth a fortnight ago, before their Christmas schedule was decimated by postponements, denying new boss Johnnie Jackson the chance to build on the superb record he's enjoyed since taking charge, with his men winning nine of his 13 match at the helm.

Man in the middle
Paul Howard was the referee for the Papa John's Trophy tie with Aston Villa U23s in August, and has shown 61 yellow and four red cards in his 18 matches in charge this season.

Wycombe will be in their regular light and dark blue quarters, with the keeper in mardi gras colours.
