After scoring his first home and match winning goal on Saturday, Sam Vokes was quick to compliment the fight of the whole Chairboys squad.
“It was good to get that one early today, as it was always going to be tough against this Lincoln City side - so getting that goal in the first few minutes to settle things down was great.
“It was a great atmosphere again from the fans and to get that goal and the result is really important, and to get off that first one and off mark at home was really nice.”
It was a tough match, and despite the early goal advantage, Lincoln pushed the Chairboys till the very end.
“There were a few moments, and I think it shows the strength of the squad that we’ve got, that we started to dig in at the end there. There were some tough chances and I think the referee made it a bit harder for us today but it is what it is. They were strong but we showed resilience and the lads fought at the end.”
It’s been a strong start for Wycombe’s new number nine, after a tough couple of seasons, and he’s hoping that the good start will continue.
“I hope so! That was my first 90 minutes in a long time, so it's all about building up on that and getting the confidence back always helps to score a few goals - hopefully I can chip in with a few more.”
Despite scoring the winning goal, Vokes was quick to point out the rest of the team’s performance and intent going forward, as well as defensive prowess.
“I just thanked Jordan in the changing room. We talked about it before the game and he stuck it right at the back sticks which is always nice. Like you said, the strength we’ve got going forward in attacking positions is, for me, fantastic to play alongside. I think the strength we’ve got in the squad and coming off the bench - we’ve got some great talent and hopefully that’ll improve even more.
“Stocko’s done brilliantly and obviously I got the goal, but I think those moments when Stocko pulls out the saves are match winning moments as well and that shows what we are as a squad. We had to dig in at the end and fight in our own 18-yard-box and they’re the moments that get you the win as well.”
