It's the first round of the Carabao Cup.
Exeter City vs Wycombe Wanderers
Tuesday 10th August 2021, k.o. 7.45pm
St James Park
Carabao Cup First Round
Referee: David Rock
Attentions turn to the first round of the League Cup as Wanderers look to build momentum following a promising pre-season campaign and impressive start to the League One season, when they visit Exeter City tonight.
The Grecians and Chairboys were regular opponents in League Two prior to the Blues' ascent to the third tier in 2018, and the Devon outfit have kept knocking at the door without quite managing to secure a return to the division they last departed alongside Wycombe in 2012.
Gareth Ainsworth scored at St James Park that year and takes his side back to the south-west looking for his first League Cup success in 90 minutes with the Wanderers; only in 2018 did Wycombe progress beyond the first round, by virtue of a penalty shootout triumph.
But his men will be full of confidence after the 2-1 victory over Accrington, while Exeter kicked off their season with a creditable draw over one of the title favourites, Bradford City.
Gareth Ainsworth has no new injury concerns, but Dominic Gape, Curtis Thompson and Ryan Tafazolli remain under observation during their recovery from knocks, and David Wheeler is ill and misses out on a return to his former club.
Exeter have hinted at handing chances to a handful of young players. Goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is a former Chairboys loanee (two appearances in 2016), and goalkeeper coach Scott Brown as an Adams Park fans favourite in his two years at the club.
Tickets can now only be bought on arrival at St James Park; any pre-booked tickets can be collected from Exeter's stadium from 6.15pm. Click here for the full ticket details.
