Wycombe Wanderers’ Ex-Players Association are sad to report the loss of another of their popular and long-standing members with the death of Arthur Burgess at the age of 90.
Originally from Stokenchurch where he played alongside future Blues players Malcolm Hunt and Stan West, Arthur made the move himself to Loakes Park in 1955 to join up with brother Cliff.
He became a mainstay of the club’s hugely successful reserve side for three seasons. Although a wing-half in competition with the likes of the Truett brothers Jim and Geoff, club vice-captain Jimmy Moring and future manager Barry Darvill, Arthur did make a handful of senior appearances.
An amusing raconteur at many club and ex-player events, he loved to tell the story of when he stepped up to first team duty for injured star winger Len Worley and, to everyone’s surprise, scored in the 4-3 win at Barking in January 1956 only to be squeezed out of the headlines because of Geoff Truett’s hat-trick in the same match.
But Arthur loved his time at Loakes Park despite being regularly overlooked for first eleven duties by Sid Cann. He made life-long friends with so many teammates like goalkeeper Ken Brown, Ray Howson, Jack Tomlin, Dennis Atkins and Vince Free. He turned up regularly for many WWEPA events and never missed the golf day and dinner organised by another old mate Derrick Draffan who, himself, died only in May. He was also sorry to learn of the death of another ex-teammate John Reardon just three weeks ago.
An engineer by trade, he lived in Marlow with late wife Beryl most of his life. Our thoughts with daughter, son and all other members of his family. Funeral arrangements are private.
*The funeral of John Reardon will take place at Amersham’s Chiltern’s Crematorium next Friday (Dec 4) at 11.45 with former Blues’ boss Martin O’Neill giving the eulogy. Because of Covid restrictions, places are severely limited and are by invitation only. But those wishing to watch the service can do so via telecast. Log-in details for that are:
