Chairgirls bow out to Maidenhead

Tara Woodward on target but Ladies lose 2-1.

20 January 2020

Wycombe Wanderers Ladies bowed out of the Berks and Bucks Senior Women’s Trophy semi final to FA National Women’s League outfit Maidenhead United after a closely contested game on Sunday afternoon.

The opening couple of minutes were frantic with both sides pressing to gain control of the game. On five minutes, the hosts had a great opportunity to impose themselves when Sam Jackson had a clear sight of goal but pulled her strike wide of the target.

Maidenhead pushed back forcing a save from Hannah Cox after a shot from Le Cumbre. The same player was the first to break the deadlock on 24 minutes when poor defending allowed a cross into the Wycombe penalty area which was half cleared to Le Cumbre who’s low shot found its way through a crowd of players to hit the back of the net.

Wycombe were not slow to reply as two minutes later, Tara Woodward equalised with a neat far post finish from a well delivered corner. Lindsay Pinker had another chance soon after following another dangerous corner but could only put her effort wide of the target. Skipper Charlotte Bagshaw also had a presentable chance but again the strike was off target.

This profligacy in front of goal was punished by the visitors when a needless free kick was conceded on the corner of the Chairgirls penalty area. The free kick was struck with power and accuracy by Halfacree and found the top corner at the far post to give the visitors the lead. Again, a positive reaction from the home side as Lindsay Pinker unleashed a shot from around 25 yards which had keeper Ellie Parker stretching well to make an excellent save.

The second half saw the Chairgirls continue to press for the equaliser with good chances squandered by Woodward and Chante Inniss. Sam Jackson came close to restoring parity when she saw her powerful shot hit the crossbar and fly to safety. Maidenhead showed their more senior experience by defending doggedly and hitting good areas to relieve the pressure which inevitably resulted in a couple of opportunities for them to extend their lead only to find Cox equal to their efforts.

An entertaining game for the many spectators that witnessed the game and one from which Wycombe can take great encouragement having pushed more senior opposition to their limits.

This coming Sunday sees the Chairgirls make the trip to Newbury in the quarter final of the SRWFL Chairman’s Cup with a 2pm kick off. If you can get to the game, your support would be very much appreciated. The ground details are: Donnington Recreation Ground, Castle Lane, Donnington, Newbury, Berks RG14 2LD.
