Striker nominates cause to receive proceeds from FIFA contest.

A Staff Wellbeing Appeal in support of NHS workers at Buckinghamshire hospitals will be the beneficiary of a $5,000 donation from EA Sports, thanks to Wycombe Wanderers star Adebayo Akinfenwa.

The striker took part in a FIFA contest, hosted by former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand, with each player receiving $5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.

Akinfenwa has nominated the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust’s Staff Wellbeing Appeal, which has already exceeded its £12,000 target via public donations, and aims to support staff wellbeing and mental health, fund well-being packs for staff, enhance staff areas to provide comfortable spaces for staff, and purchase other items or activities that enhance the wellbeing of staff caring for COVID-19 patients.

He said: “I wanted the money to make a difference to a cause which is close to home and right now the NHS deserve all of our love and respect for the work they are doing to help so many people.

“The Staff Wellbeing Appeal was recommended by Wycombe Wanderers and I’m happy that the money will hopefully help to make life a little easier for the NHS staff who are up against some incredible challenges right now."

Meanwhile the club’s players, staff and fans have now raised more than £5,500 in monetary donations for the One Can Trust foodbank in High Wycombe, following an appeal from the charity in light of increased demand but reduced supply of food parcels for families in crisis during the coronavirus outbreak.
