Anstey Lane’s 3G pitch and stadium in Alton was the setting for the Development Team’s third encounter in the Southern Region Women’s Football League on Sunday, with the game taking place in heavy showers and blustery conditions.
The game was competitive and tight, with neither side able to wrestle control of the game or put together significant periods of possession. The first half saw Alton enjoy a little more territorial ground, due to Wycombe’s stuttering build up play, but this provided opportunities for Wycombe to exploit the high and square defensive line of the home side. The three best chances of the first half saw Chloe Ball get in behind Alton’s defence in this way with her shots narrowly going past the post. From a penalty box scramble Ball also hit the post.
On the basis of those chances Wycombe were disappointed to go in at the break all square.
With ten minutes to go Wycombe launched one of its counter attacks with Ball surging past the Alton right back and cutting in to the penalty area. Ball cut the ball back to Amelie Baker arriving into the six yard box and opening her body to use the pace of the cross, calmly side-footed the ball into the net past the keeper. A frantic last few minutes saw Alton press, and seek the equaliser but again it was another counter attack from the Wycombe team which saw Baker, find herself at the far post this time, tapping in from close range after a cross from Ball had been bundled onto the post by some last ditch defending.
The young Chairgirls had won 2-0 with the hard-earned three points welcomed by the visitors with again lots of learning from the game.
