Chesham up next in Women's FA Cup

Ladies overcome Worthing 3-1 in second

7 October 2019

Wycombe Wanderers Ladies earned a mouth-watering tie at neighbours Chesham United in the third round of the Women's FA Cup after seeing off Worthing on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Samantha Jackson, Tara Woodward and captain Charlotte Bagshaw secured a 3-1 win over Worthing, and they'll now meet Chesham - of the National League Division 1 South West - on October 27th at 2pm.

Both teams enjoyed spells of pressure in the opening 15 minutes but the best chances arguably fell in favour of the hosts who went close through Woodward, Chante Inniss and Jackson. The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute when skipper Charlotte Bagshaw ended a powerful run into the opposition defensive third with an effort that left the Worthing keeper floundering as the ball sailed into the top corner of the goal.

The weather transformed from sunshine to driving rain in a matter of seconds and then back to drier conditions. The game turned in a similar short period when the Chairgirls won a free-kick which was taken by Jackson. Her strike nestled in the top corner of the visitors goal to extend the lead. On 40 minutes, Inniss chased down a fifty fifty ball and won her battle to then square the ball into the path of the hard working Woodward who finished in style.

The second half saw the hosts become more nervy than should have been expected as they conceded possession cheaply on numerous occasions allowing Worthing a tantalising glimpse of opportunity when a powerfully struck effort beat Amy Batkin for pace reducing the deficit.

This led to a period of sustained pressure from a very competent Worthing outfit with Batkin having to be at her acrobatic best to keep the visitors from getting a foothold in the game. The best of these was an outstanding reaction save from a well struck shot inside the 18 yard box which she somehow pushed over the bar.

Resolute defending, ably guided by the dependable back four unit and supported by the rest of the team, enabled the hosts to break free of their inertia and to threaten Worthing once again. Woodward, in particular, proving to be a thorn in the side of the Worthing back four when she broke through and neatly by-passed both keeper and centre back but good work from a recovering defender forced Woodward wide enough to ensure that her shot missed the target.

The hosts dug deep to hold on to their lead and progress to the next round which is the furthest the Chairgirls have got in the Women’s FA Cup in their history. The draw which took place on Monday sees the Chairgirls hosted by National League outfit Chesham United in a Buckinghamshire derby on 27 October.

Next week’s league fixture sees the Chairgirls play host to AFC Bournemouth who were runners up in the premier division last season. Kick off is at 2pm and all Wycombe Wanderers supporters are welcome.
