Chairgirls' development squad earn away win

AFC Bournemouth Development 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers Development

7 October 2019

The Development team travelled to Bournemouth keen to put in an improved performance from last week’s hard fought win at Alton.

The pleasant playing conditions made for a good football match with both sides looking to play possession based attacking football.

Wycombe had the better of the first half on chances created, with the best falling to Rachel Southby who was thwarted by a fine save from the Bournemouth keeper. Wycombe defended in numbers and when breaking looked dangerous. Emily Wheller, Francesca Day, and Amelie Baker’s attacking combination play down the right proving particularly effective. Whilst defensively time, Yasmin Knock and Danielle Coward were strong at the centre of Wycombe’s defence, with Poland and Thorne working hard in front of them to confront Bournemouth’s attacks. Wycombe limited Bournemouth’s shooting opportunities. At half time it was 0-0.

Wycombe broke the deadlock on 65 minutes when some neat football down the left flank found Chloe Ball on the corner of the box in a pocket of space. Ball turned and jinking in on her right foot hit a strong shot into the roof of the net with the keeper beaten for pace.

At 1-0 up Wycombe were then pushed back with the inevitable response from Bournemouth, who had been stung by finding themselves behind. Jodie Whittle was forced to make a fine save with her feet from close range. The young Chairgirls team became a little ragged and were pinned back into their own half. Just as they appeared to be settling down, they conceded a soft goal from a throw in, at a moment when Wycombe were trying to make a substitution.

Both sides had worked incredibly hard through the game, so it was no surprise that the last few minutes saw the game stretched. With two minutes to go Wycombe earned a much needed free kick on the corner of the Bournemouth penalty area, following a strong run by Danika Shah down the left flank which was eventually stopped after she had been clumsily bundled over.

Wycombe ‘loaded the box’ and Southby delivered an in-swinging ball underneath the crossbar, which the keeper flapped at, and the covering defending could not keep out - 2-1 Wycombe.  There was no time for an equaliser from Bournemouth. The young Chairgirls team had earned a fine win, against a well- coached and organised Bournemouth team, and had produced a much improved performance from the previous week.
