The Chairgirls welcomed Tilehurst Panthers of SRWFL Division 1 in the Chairman’s Cup competition and ran out convincing winners with an 11-1 victory on Sunday.
The quality of football played by the hosts in the first half was not that of the standard previously on display at Abingdon United last week but nonetheless produced goal scoring opportunities.
Sarah Harrison opened the scoring with a well taken right foot shot high into the goal. Chante Inniss got in on the goal scoring action by netting three times in the opening 30 minutes, each different in how she worked the opening to score. Arguably her best was when she dispossessed a Tilehurst defender and turned to fire in low to the corner. Sam Jackson helped herself to two first-half goals for the Chairgirls to lead 6-0 at half-time.
Tilehurst to their credit worked hard to make sure the hosts didn’t have everything their way when a defensive mix up was punished to reduce the deficit. Kate Hudson sought to redress the balance when she was the first to react to a loose ball from a corner and stabbed home from 10 yards. Jackson added to her tally when the Tilehurst keeper made an error of judgement to allow a moderately struck shot slide past her to take the Chairgirls into double figures. Tara Woodward scored the 11th goal late on to put the tie to bed.
An improved second half with better ball retention and less reliance on long passes than in the first half, many of which carried through to the Tilehurst keeper or out of play and some very well taken goals.
Next week sees the long-awaited return to league action with a trip down to Warsash Wasps with a 2pm kick-off. It would be great to see some of our home support make the trip.
