Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust, the charitable arm of Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, is pleased to announce the launch of a volunteering based programme, which seeks to benefit the local community of High Wycombe, and in particular those people who are currently unemployed.
For the past 2 years WWSET has delivered its hugely successful ‘Fit & Fed’ initiative which seeks to combat the triple inequalities of hunger, isolation, and inactivity that are faced by many children during school holiday periods.
Working in partnership with two local Community Interest Companies - Empower to Cook and Khepera - WWSET’s Fit & Fed programme runs free holiday activities that enable children and their families to be active together, and empowers them to cook and eat healthy food together. This is achieved via the delivery of engaging cooking tutorials, fun physical activities and the provision of a nutritious meal for the whole family to enjoy.
Each Fit & Fed day sees WWSET’s Community Health Manager Sam Parker, representatives from Empower to Cook and Khepera, and a band of willing volunteers bring fresh food and ingredients to the two venues where the sessions are delivered (Castlefield Community Centre and Beechview Academy).
Throughout the day cooking lessons and tutorials are put on for the children in attendance which teaches them the basic skills necessary to prepare and cook food, along with some of the messages concerned with the importance of a healthy diet.
And the best bit….everybody sits down together at the end of the day to enjoy the meals that have been prepared!
As mentioned above, the Fit & Fed programme already engages with a number of volunteers who assist in a whole host of various ways.
But we need more volunteers!
Therefore WWSET will be running a five-week volunteer programme targeting local unemployed people to equip them with the skills required to support our work, as well as those already in employment but wanting to give something back to their local community. As part of the programme all volunteers will develop vital transferable skills that will not only improve their confidence but hopefully allow them to go on and find meaningful employment (if they aren’t already in it) following the culmination of the programme. Furthermore all participants on the volunteer programme will be given the opportunity to undertake numerous qualifications at no cost to themselves in the areas of:
- Food Safety and Hygiene
- Safeguarding & Children
- Health & Safety
- Hospitality & Retail
The main five week programme is scheduled to run on the following dates:
- Thursday 25th April 2019
- Thursday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd May 2019
