A late equaliser from a trialist midfielder saw the Chairboys draw 1-1 with Barnet in their inaugural friendly of the summer.
Gareth Ainsworth gave minutes to a number of trialists at the Hive – following a two-week spell of training ahead of the pre-season curtain raiser.
It was a first half of limited chances for both sides, but the Chairboys went the closest to breaking the deadlock within the opening half an hour. A trialist centre midfielder sent in a cross destined for Craig Mackail-Smith – but the ball was diverted away for a corner which a trialist centre back fired wide.
The Bees came firing out of the blocks in the second half and had an early opportunity to take the lead. Jack Barham found space through the middle of the pitch before evading a sliding challenge and attempting to curl the ball beyond Cameron Yates – but the Chairboys keeper spread himself well to block his strike.
Moments later and the home side raced into the lead. Barham was involved yet again and found space on the edge of the area – before threading the ball across to Dan Sparkes who poked home from one-yard out.
Perhaps the best chance of an equaliser following the opener fell to Alex Samuel – who was unfortunate not to beat former Watford stopper Scott Loach. The Welshman found himself through on goal following a lapse in concentration within the Barnet defence – but Loach held firm and saved well from close range.
With the very last kick of the game, a trialist centre midfielder notched the leveller for the Chairboys. The trialist left-back sent in a pinpoint cross into the area, which found the midfielder at the back post to tap home beyond Loach.
