It’s official – Fred Onyedinma is a Wanderer, with Gareth Ainsworth delivering the news that Chairboys fans had been hoping to hear all summer.
The forward joins on a three-year contract from Millwall, as defender Jason McCarthy moves in the opposite direction, with both deals involving undisclosed fees.
Ainsworth said: “Fred has been a target since the day he left us at the end of his loan spell last season, and I’m over the moon to bring him here on a permanent deal.
“He’s a player with huge potential, and a great deal of credit goes to our chairman Trevor Stroud for getting the deal over the line and bringing Fred back to the club, where I know he’ll settle straight back in and be a popular member of the team in the changing room and on the terraces.
“It’s a bittersweet day for me as we say goodbye to Jason McCarthy, who had an outstanding year with us and deservedly won the Supporters’ Player of the Year award. We knew when we signed him that his long-term future probably belonged at a higher level and once the opportunity came up for him to return to the Championship, it seemed the right thing for us to reach an agreement that suited all parties.
“We wish Jason every success at Millwall, and thank him for his fantastic efforts with us.”
Onyedinma returns to Adams Park for a third spell, having originally signed on loan as a teenager in 2014, and recapturing the same excellent form during a superb four-month loan deal last season before rejoining the Lions.
McCarthy spent two periods with the Wanderers, firstly as a loanee in 2015/16, and then signing a three-year deal last August, joining the club from Barnsley.
Fred passed his medical at BMI The Chiltern Hospital and will wear squad number 23.
