Gareth: Big atmosphere can spur us on

We're determined to start a cup run, says the manager.

Gareth Ainsworth says his side are determined to spring a surprise on Championship outfit Reading when the two teams meet in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening at Adams Park (k.o. 7.45pm).

The Royals make their first trip to south Bucks since 2002 for a competitive fixture, still looking to find their feet after suffering back-to-back defeats at the beginning of their league campaign.

Conversely, Wanderers go into the fixture with momentum following a win and a draw in their opening two games, and the Blues boss hopes the Wycombe faithful carry that optimism into the occasion in support of their team.

“We want to win this game,” he declared. “We want to be strong. In the past, we’ve made changes to the team and perhaps people have questioned why we’re weakening the team. Even if we do make changes on Tuesday, we’ve got the likes of Josh Parker, Scott Kashket, Alex Samuel and David Wheeler who we could bring in, and we certainly wouldn’t be weakening the team.

“Whichever team we put out there will be one which can win the game. We want to get through and start a cup run, so we hope the fans come down and it’d be fantastic to get a good atmosphere against a Reading side that we don’t often meet but I know they’re bringing a huge away following with them.”

Meanwhile right-back Jack Grimmer, who helped knock then-Premier League side out of the FA Cup when at League 2 Coventry in January 2018, reckons belief is the key when facing higher-placed opposition.

“We’ve got confidence going into the game,” he said. “I’ve played my part in cup upsets before and it’s all about belief and taking your chances when they come. Reading struggled a bit last year and they changed manager, but we’ll be ready for them and looking to get the win.”

Tickets for the game can be booked online at or via the TicketCo Wallet app.
