Wycombe Wanderers vs Southend United
Saturday 29th September 2018, k.o. 3pm
Adams Park
Referee: Tom Nield
Sponsor: Wycombe Leisure Centre

The final game of a hectic September brings Southend United to Adams Park for the first meeting between the sides since that unforgettable day at Wembley back in 2015, but forget revenge - the driving force for the Chairboys will be their determination for a first home win in the league this season.

Continuity for Gareth Ainsworth's men has been hard to come by during a period of league and cup matches coming thick and fast, prompting changes to personnel and tactics, and while a common theme has come in the high standard of performances, Wanderers know they need to start converting some draws into wins to give them the best chance of achieving their aims.

Standing in their way on Saturday are a Southend side who finished last season strongly following the appointment of club legend Chris Powell, though progress has been steady if unspectacular this term, with last weekend's win over Fleetwood ending a run of three straight league defeats.

The matchday carries extra significance with its support for Prostate Cancer UK, following the news that ex-player Howard Kennedy passed away earlier this month after a five-year illness. He'll be remembered with a minute's applause in the eighth minute, with Southend and Chris Powell in particular being excellent supporters of the charity's various ongoing initiatives.

Fans of both clubs are asked to contribute to the collections around the stadium ahead of kick-off, and to purchase a badge in support of the charity. Ex-player Howard Kennedy will be remembered with a minute's applause in the eighth minute of the game.

Team news

Gareth Ainsworth revealed his side had collected one or two knocks in the midweek loss to Norwich, while Anthony Stewart, Adam El-Abd and Nathan Tyson are the confirmed absentees. Jason McCarthy and Scott Kashket are in line for their 50th appearances for the club.

Southend welcome back keeper Mark Oxley following suspension, while Michael Kightly should also be involved following an absence, though Powell may keep faith with the outfield players who contributed to last week's win over Fleetwood.

Man in the middle
Referee Tom Nield has shown 29 yellow cards two reds in nine games so far this season.

He last officiated a Wanderers game back in November 2017 in a home fixture against Yeovil Town; awarding the Chairboys a penalty which Joe Jacobson stuck away with the second goal of a 2-1 victory. Nield took charge of a Southend game more recently, overseeing their 2-0 home win against Bradford City in August.
