Gareth: Experience will help

Blues boss previews Barnet.

Gareth Ainsworth says the experienced heads in his dressing room will prove important in the Sky Bet League Two run-in, as the season comes down to its final ten games with Wanderers right in the promotion mix.

The Chairboys sit in fourth position going into this Saturday’s fixture against relegation threatened Barnet and will be looking to get back to winning ways to crank up pressure on the three teams which currently occupy the automatic promotion places.

The gaffer, speaking to the press on Thursday morning ahead of Saturday’s trip to the Hive, is expecting a stern challenge against Graham Westley’s battling Bees and says every game from now until the end of season will require the utmost effort from his squad to achieve the targets they have set.

Wycombe will be aided in their cause by having previous promotion winners in their ranks and Gareth Ainsworth says that will be a big advantage.

“There have been times this season when the older heads in the group have been crucial; where the younger lads have looked to them as they have never been in this situation before when the pressure cooker is on,” he said.

“But the majority of older lads have got promotions under their belt and know what it takes to get over the line and that experience is good to be able to call upon and the blend here is good.

“Every player is going to be important now until the end of the season, there is going to be a lot of twists and turns yet but I am really pleased with this platform we have given ourselves.

“We would have taken this position at the start of the season and now we want to complete the job, go better than last year and see how far we can go.

“To win promotion would be incredible but we have to take it one step at a time. We’ve got a game in hand over third place which will be against Crawley next Wednesday, but Saturday is key at the moment.

“We need to get the result we want against Barnet but it will not be easy as no game is in this division so we need to be firing on all cylinders from the off.”
