A late penalty from Marcus Forss separated Wycombe Wanderers and Brentford in an entertaining pre-season fixture at Adams Park.
The Chairboys, lining up in a 4-3-3 formation, began the game brightly and were denied by the assistant referee’s flag after seven minutes. Michael Harriman did superbly to tee up Trialist-CF who slotted home inside the area, but he had made his run just a fraction too early.
Up the other end and Brentford went close on the counter after 14 minutes. Alan Judge's drilled shot was blocked by the knees of Yves Ma-Kalambay, and then Neal Maupay's attempted back-heel was deflected to safety.
Trialist-CF continued to play a big part in the action, this time in the other box, sliding in to block Josh Clarke's effort after Sergi Canos slid the ball through perfectly with 22 minutes on the clock.
Approaching the half-hour mark, the Bees were starting to find their rhythm with some slick passing around Wycombe’s 18-yard box. One passing move fell to Maupay on the edge, but he failed to hit the target as the ball sailed over the crossbar.
Ma-Kalambay, looking to put in a claim to start between the sticks for the league opener in just over a couple of weeks’ time, did his chances no harm with a superb stop to his left to deny Romaine Sawyers after visitors opened up the home defence with a quick one-two on 35’.
A couple of minutes later, after dealing with a sustained spell of Brentford pressure, Wanderers went close to taking the lead themselves as Harriman drilled a shot a yard wide from outside the box after a neat lay-off from Adebayo Akinfenwa.
Half-time: Wycombe 0-0 Brentford
Wycombe, making nine changes at the break in a diamond 4-4-2 formation, came flying out of the traps after the restart. Nathan Tyson was sent racing down the right-hand side, he looked to pick out strike partner Craig Mackail-Smith but it was cut out for a corner on 47’.
From the resulting corner there was a golden chance to open the scoring for Trialist CB-1 as it fell kindly for him four yards from goal, but he wasted the opportunity, firing the ball over the bar.
Back came Wycombe again, Tyson again involved as he sent a looping header onto the roof of the net after a cross in from the right.
Former Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders caught the Bees’ defence napping on 55 minutes as he picked out Trialist CB-1 unmarked from free-kick 40-yards out. The defender opted to try and catch Luke Daniels out with a header towards the near post rather than sending it back across the six-yard box, but the keeper was equal to it.
A piece of sublime goalkeeping from summer signing Ryan Allsop kept the scores level on 58 minutes. Sergi Canos' shot deflected, looped up and looked destined for the net before Rocky somehow clawed it behind for a corner, which he then held.
Allsop impressed again shortly after; parrying Maupay's shot behind after it bounced awkwardly en route to the bottom corner.
With twenty minutes to go, Brentford rung out the changes with 10 new faces entering the field. Those fresh legs paid dividends on 75 minutes as Harriman brought down full-back Moses Odubajo in the box, and referee David Rock pointed to the spot. Forss stepped up and slotted the penalty beyond Allsop in the bottom the left corner, despite the keeper guessing the right way.
Five minutes of normal time remaining and Forss nearly had a second but scuffed his shot after getting away from Sido Jombati as Brentford looked to put the game beyond the Chairboys.
Wycombe had one last opportunity to even the score, as the ball reached Tyson from Saunders’ cross. The forward couldn’t get his body over the ball though and ended up firing high over the top.
So two narrow defeats against higher opposition for the Chairboys so far in pre-season, with a trip to Havant and Waterlooville next up at the weekend.
