Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth praised the effort of everyone involved with the club as they took their play-off push to the final day of the season.
A dominant performance from the Chairboys saw them sign off the campaign with a 1-0 win over fellow play-off rivals Cambridge United thanks to a second half Scott Kashket goal. Though it was not enough to sneak into the top seven on the final day as results elsewhere didn't go Wanderers' way.
After a long and memorable season of 58 games, Gareth's side put together a run of just two defeats of their last 13 to take their quest for League One football to the very last kick, and the manager is hoping to bottle up that spirit and take it into next season; with promotion firmly on the agenda.
"I'm feeling very positive," he said speaking after the match.
"People will look at this and see we have just missed out having finished the season brilliantly, and I'm looking over the last three years, not just the last 46 games, to see that where we are is fantastic.
"I said to my staff half way through the second half that whatever happens, what a performance to finish with and what confidence this will bring for next season because we've got 19 players in contract for next season I think and that's great for a manager to have with the philosophy laid down and I'm happy with the players. Yes, we need a couple more but I'm really pleased and positive that we've finished the season really well.
"We've dug deep and bounced back and I asked for four wins and even me with my positivity was thinking that was tall order and we almost did it, so I'm really pleased and proud of the boys. There is no effort left out there and as a manager I can't ask for any more. Staff, players and fans did what I asked for and that's brilliant for me.
"We've improved year on year and that has been important and if we improve again next year we won't be far away at all."
