Report: QPR U23s 1-2 Wycombe

15 July 2017

Goals from Dayle Southwell and Paris Cowan-Hall were enough to hand the Chairboys their first victory of pre-season in a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers U23s, in a behind closed doors friendly.

Southwell gave the Chairboys the lead from the spot just before half time after Sam Saunders was brought down in the area. The R's then levelled ten minutes into the second half through Abdenasser El Khayati before Cowan-Hall restored the Chairboys lead on the hour-mark.

The game, played at the QPR's training ground, started at a fast pace on a greasy surface with light rain overhead, with Wycombe lining up in a 4-3-3 formation. Adam El-Abd, making his Chairboys debut, was on hand with a smart tackle early doors to deny a Rangers breakaway.

Some neat work by Nathan Tyson and Joe Jacobson down the left-hand side saw the latter play a zipping low ball in the direction of Southwell with the 10 minutes gone. The striker got something on it but it flew over the bar.

Both sides enjoyed spells of pressure in the opening half, with Wycombe almost capitalising on the counter after QPR pushed forward. Southwell broke out and ran at the QPR defence down the right before teeing the ball to Marcus Bean on the edge. The midfielder cracked a first-time effort which smashed the crossbar, with the keeper seemingly beaten all ends up, with 30 minutes gone.

The Chairboys were given the opportunity to take the lead from the spot 15 minutes later as Saunders, facing away from the goal, was brought down as the defender got his legs tangled with the Wycombe midfield man.

Up-stepped Southwell, a player who had done all but score last week against Slough Town, to rifle the ball home into the left corner of the net and ensure the Chairboys went into the break ahead.

Half-time: QPR U23s 0-1 Wycombe

Gareth Ainsworth rang the changes at half time with Wycombe going into a 3-5-2 formation with Danny Rowe, Matt Bloomfield and Cowan-Hall coming in for El-Abd, Bean and Southwell.

Bloomfield was straight into the action and fired wide from inside the box with just a couple of minutes played.

Whilst Wycombe tried to adapt to the new formation, QPR U23s caught them cold. The ball was played out wide to El Khayati who got away from Harriman, jinking in and out before striking the ball beyond Scott Brown.

The Chairboys rallied quickly and following some neat build-up play from Harriman, Saunders and Cowan-Hall, Harriman got to the byline before picking out Cowan-Hall who neatly slotted home with a right-footed effort into the far corner.

The gaffer made further changes on the hour mark as Trialist-GK, Max Muller, Will De Havilland, Dominic Gape, Nick Freeman came on in place of Brown, Jacobson, Trialist-LW, Luke O'Nien and Saunders.

With the next goal looking crucial, Paul Hayes and Adebayo Akinfenwa were introduced to the field in place of Sido Jombati and Tyson as the Chairboys reverted to their familar 4-3-3 with just over 15 minutes remaining.

The pace of Cowan-Hall, mixed with the experienced strength and power of Bayo and Hayes put the R's on the back foot for the closing exchanges. Despite their pressure however, the Chairboys could not add a third and settled for a 2-1 victory.

Ainsworth's men now travel to Aldershot Town on Saturday 22nd July in the next stage of their pre-season preparations.
