Read our fact file on the Chairboys’ newest recruit.

Wycombe Wanderers announced the signing of defender Adam El-Abd on a two-year contract. The centre half joins the Chairboys after spending 2016/17 at League One side Shrewsbury Town, where he was named as club captain ahead of the campaign.

As well as his leadership skills, El-Abd, 32, offers a wealth of experience having enjoyed four promotions in his career to date.

The defender began his career with boyhood club Brighton and Hove Albion, making over 300 appearances for the Seagulls in an 11 year stay.

The Egyptian international played a key role in Albion’s promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in 2011, as the team boasted the second best defensive record in the division on their way to the title, conceding just 40 times in 46 games. El-Abd’s efforts were rewarded with the club’s Player of the Year Award for that season.

After two-and-a-half years in the second tier with the Seagulls, the defender moved on to Bristol City in January 2014 on a three-and-a-half year deal. The Robins at the time were looking to build a squad to mount a promotion push back to the Championship in 2014/15, which they indeed did.

El-Abd began the promotion season at Ashton Gate, but moved out on loan to Bury in November 2014. The no nonsense centre-half became a mainstay of the Shakers’ backline, making 24 appearances.

After originally joining a side on the verge of the play-offs, a run of 13 wins from their final 16 games saw David Flitcroft’s side snatch automatic promotion from the Chairboys and Southend on a dramatic final day of the Sky Bet League Two season.

Loan spells at Swindon and Gillingham followed before El-Abd signed permanently for Shrewsbury Town in July 2016. El-Abd was made Town captain for the 2016/17 season, adding experience and aggression to the Town defence.

El-Abd went on to make 34 appearances in all competitions at Greenhous Meadow, scoring twice – one of which was a wonder strike from 25-yards at Southend United.

El-Abd has also made a name for himself on the international stage, and has been capped for Egypt seven times.
