The Big Match Preview: Coventry

7 February 2017

All you need to know ahead of tonight's Checkatrade Trophy semi-final (k.o. 7.30pm).

Coventry City vs Wycombe Wanderers
Tuesday 7th February, 7.30pm
Ricoh Arena, CV6 6AQ
Referee: Darren England

One step from Wembley. Coventry and Wycombe meet again in the Checkatrade Trophy, with a little more riding on the outcome of this fixture than the last.

It was early November when the Sky Blues turned around a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 in the final group stage match, with both sides' progress to the knockout stages already confirmed beforehand.

Since then, City haven't won a single league match, sending them to the foot of the League 1 table, but they have beaten Crawley, Brighton U21s and Swansea U21s to reach the semi-final.

By contrast, Wycombe responded with an eight-game winning streak amidst a 16-match unbeaten run which saw them overcome Millwall, Blackpool and Mansfield in the Trophy.

So it sets up a first ever trip to the Ricoh Arena for Gareth Ainsworth's men, in front of a crowd which could surpass 10,000 fans desperate to see their respective sides reach the final.

City sparkled in the second half of that November meeting with their younger fringe players catching the eye, and boss Russell Slade could be tempted to give them a chance once again given the poor league form from their first-team regulars.

Wycombe are in the midst of a chaotic fixture schedule which may have a bearing on team selection following the superb yet exhausting effort in their 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Saturday.

Dominic Gape and Alex Jakubiak are cup-tied so can't feature at the Ricoh.

It's a knockout
This season's semi-finals are one-legged affairs, meaning it must be settled on the night. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, there'll be a penalty shootout to determine the winners.

Wanderers sold out their pre-sale allocation of 400 tickets but there's plenty of availability for fans wishing to pay on the night - click here for details.
