Wycombe vs Mansfield

14 April 2017

Report: Wycombe 0-1 Mansfield

Wycombe's play-off hopes received a major blow as they lost 0-1 at home to Mansfield.

An early goal from Krystian Pearce was enough for the Stags to take all the points in a frustrating affair for the Chairboys.

Gareth Ainsworth made five changes for this one, with Sido Jombati, Marcus Bean, Luke O'Nien, Scott Kashket and Adebayo Akinfenwa coming into the starting XI in a 4-3-3 formation.

With both team up for this one, Mansfield produced the first chance of the game; Danny Rose going for the spectacular inside the opening two minutes from 25-yards on the half-volley, though Blackman collected comfortably.

The stags did take the lead on 13 minutes however - Joel Byrom whipped in a free kick 30-yards out which Pearce headed on to the post, the ball fell kindly for the defender after hitting the woodwork and he tapped it in with Blackman committed.

Blues had a chance to reply as Joe Jacobson was fouled 25-yards from goal with 23 minutes gone. Harriman stepped up and put the free kick just over the bar.

The first booking of the game went to Rose on 25 minutes as he deliberately stopped Blackman starting an attack with his hand. Byrom joined him in the referee's notebook after bringing down Akinfenwa on halfway on 28'.

Rhys Bennett almost turned Harriman's cross into his own net on the half-hour mark as Bayo put him under pressure, the ball looped over Kean with him planted to the floor, but it went over the bar.

The Chairboys had a massive let-off thanks to Aaron Pierre on 35 minutes. Benning's cross was tipped on by Blackman and the defender threw himself at Alfie Potter's resulting strike to stop a certain goal.

Akinfenwa so nearly had Wycombe level at the break as he used his body well to get away from Pearce. With a bit of space he went for the half-volley from 20-yards which zipped just over the crossbar.

Half-time: Wycombe 0-1 Mansfield

Wycombe made a good start to the second period, applying some early pressure, and if it wasn't for a crucial flick from Bennett they would have equalised on 54 minutes as Thompson picked Akinfenwa out at the back post. The big man's header was heading for the near corner but that for block.

Soon after, Benning was booked for a foul on Bloomfield on half-way, Thompson tried his luck on 58' as the ball fell to him just outside the area. The winger whipped one towards the left-corner but it flashed over.

With twenty minutes remaining, Kashket was denied as it looked like the equaliser in a great move from the home side. The striker pulled the trigger but the ball was bravely blocked.

Sub Alex Macdonald was booked for a foul 20-yards out. Jacobson stepped up, got it up and over the wall but Jake Kean got down well to deny him on 73'.

Time ticked on and the Chairboys were getting closer. Harriman picked out Bayo, but his header was superbly denied with ten to play. With Freeman and Weston on for Bloomfield and Thompson, it was all Wycombe.

As Coulthirst looked dangerous on the counter, Harriman was booked for hauling him to the ground on halfway in the late stages. Jacobson lumped one long to Akinfenwa who got a flick on it, but Kean got down superbly just before injury time.

As four minutes were added Wycombe threw the kitchen sink at it, but they just couldn't find a way through. They now go to Barnet on Easter Monday with a lot of ground to make up with games running out.
