Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust are set to deliver an exciting new programme from Wednesday 17th May - the Football Fans In Training initiative.Following a successful funding application made to the Sports Council Trust Company, SET are thrilled to launch FFIT which is a hugely successful lifestyle programme aimed at men aged 35 – 65 years old and with a waist size of 38 inches or more.
Delivered at professional clubs, by professional clubs, participants get the chance to learn about diet and nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices and take part in gentle physical activity. Each programme runs one evening a week for 12 weeks at the participating stadium, with participants building up their ability to take part in some football related activity.
Our 12-week programme will aim to improve the health and wellbeing of WWFC fans, whilst also providing a behind-the-scenes look at Wycombe Wanderers. The FREE weekly sessions are split between education based workshops and physical activity training with all sessions delivered by WWSET’s professional coaches.
The main aims of the programme are to:
• Increase knowledge of diet & nutrition
• Improve lifestyle choices
• Increase physical activity amongst participants
• Reduce weight and waist measurements
• Increase engagement in other physical activity
FFIT is not a ‘diet and exercise’ programme. There is no diet to follow and no exercise routine to adhere to. It’s about education; learning about what the body requires to get through each day, and then how to obtain those requirements in a healthier way – nutrition, portion size, fat and sugar content etc.
The FFIT programme was originally developed in Scotland by the Scottish Professional Football League, and the programme is currently being delivered by all Scottish Premier League clubs as well as a handful of English clubs including Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town and Leyton Orient.
During last season incredible results were achieved by the delivering clubs: 647 men completed a FFIT programme and achieved a total weight loss of a massive 3776.8kg, as well as a total reduction in waist size of 4702cm. This equates to an average weight loss per person of 5.8kg and an average waist size reduction per person of 7.3cm.
A few past participants commented on the benefits and main changes they had achieved via the FFIT programme, which included weight loss, alcohol intake reduction, reduction of sweets, crisps & takeaways, walk a lot more instead of driving, eating healthier, counting steps daily, increased fitness and increased confidence.
Following last season’s delivery an investigatory study of the FFIT programme was undertaken by the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at University of Glasgow. Overall over 90% of participants who were analysed as part of the study were at very high or extremely high risk of future ill-health. Around three-quarters of participants in all age groups were at ‘very high’ risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Qualitative data revealed that the powerful ‘draw’ of the football club attracted men otherwise reluctant to attend existing weight management programmes and the location and style of delivery of FFIT sessions fostered team spirit; men appreciated being with others ‘like them’ and the opportunity to undertake weight management in circumstances that enhanced physical and symbolic proximity to something they valued highly, the football club.
So, as you can see from the above, not only is there a proven need for programmes such as FFIT, but fantastic results have been achieved through its delivery. Therefore, if you are a Chairboys fan aged between 35 -65, have a waist size of 38 inches or more, and have an appetite (if you’ll pardon the pun) to reduce your waist size and get fitter and healthier please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 01494 455736 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is a great opportunity to shed a few pounds and live a healthier and more active life with the support of Wycombe Wanderers FC and we look forward to seeing as many of our fans as possible benefit from the FFIT programme.
