Ainsworth: The process is key to success

7 April 2017

Gareth Ainsworth believes a positive approach from everyone on Saturday will go a long way in the Chairboys getting the result they want vs Cheltenham Town.

With six games to go, Wycombe sit just four points outside the play-off picture, and will be hoping to cut that gap this Saturday when the Robins come to Adams Park.

Although it is not mathematically in Wanderers' hands if they reach the top-seven come May, with teams playing each other at the top of the division before the final kick, Ainsworth believes his players are still very much in charge of their own destiny.

"I've told the boys that it's in our hands," the manager said.

"I know that sounds like a silly comment because it's not in our hands if everyone else wins but that's not going to happen.

"People will play each other, people will beat each other and take points off each other, so as far as I'm concerned with six games to go this is in our hands, and I don't see why we can't be the team that make that late run and take that momentum into the play-offs."

Cheltenham have much to play for themselves going into the game on Saturday with their League Two status still not secure.

A 3-1 win against Morecambe last time out ended a run of four straight defeats, and the Robins will be looking to build on that this weekend.

Gareth, expecting a tough task, has said that a good atmosphere from the Wycombe faithful will be crucially important in the outcome of the game.

"Cheltenham are fighting for their lives with Newport putting a run together that has come out of nowhere."

"So they'll be scrapping, they won 3-1 on Saturday and they have players of a good quality; Holman is a decent player up front and they have Pell, a big lad who scored a couple on Saturday, and the only one they won't have will be Scott Brown, my keeper, who thankfully can't play against us.

"I don't want people to just focus on the result, I want people to focus on the process, and the process is the performance on the pitch, the support to the boys, everything positive - that's process.

"If we do everything right in the process, we will get the result we deserve."
