Report: Wycombe 2-4 CoventryWanderers were swept away by a storm of Coventry attacks in the second half to condemn them to a second-place finish in Southern Group D of the Checkatrade Trophy.
A much-changed Wycombe line-up led at the break through Stephen McGinn’s deflected effort, and could have been further ahead with Garry Thompson’s header being tipped over the bar and Scott Kashket clipping the outside of the post with a clever shot on the turn.
At the other end, Scott Brown was only troubled once before the break, denying George Thomas with an excellent block as the midfielder bore down on goal, but a triple substitution from the League 1 side eventually swung the game in their favour.
One of those new arrivals – Ryan Haynes – misplaced a backpass for Kashket to capitalise and tap home the second goal into an empty net, but the celebrations had barely died down before Haynes made amends with a smart finish after wriggling in from the left.
Haynes then saw his shot squirm over the line after Brown had partially blocked his powerful drive from a Jodi Jones cross, and Jones was again the architect for Thomas to crash home City’s third in just 10 minutes.
As Wycombe sought a leveller to take it to penalties, the Sky Blues broke and wrapped up the win when Haynes squared for Gael Bigirimana to fire home, securing a perfect record in the group stage for Mark Venus’s men.
