Dayle Southwell netted on his Adams Park debut to force a well-deserved draw against Brentford in the first home friendly of pre-season.Former Boston United striker Southwell got off to the best possible start on home turf, meeting Paris Cowan-Hall's cross with a close-range header to cancel out John Egan's first-half opener.
Blues began on top with their three-pronged attack linking up well to test the visitors’ backline, and the best chance fell to Garry Thompson when Myles Weston delivered a perfect cross, only for the keeper to pull off a superb reflex save – although the offside flag had been raised anyway.
The visitors’ only real opening of the first quarter came when Lasse Vibe burst into the box but he was out-muscled by Aaron Pierre before Joe Jacobson quelled Ryan Woods’ threat as the ball found its way to him.
Bees keeper Jack Bonham reacted well to keep out Luke O’Nien’s close-range snapshot after Weston returned the trialist winger’s cross into danger, before it was the turn of Wanderers’ stopper to impress when he spread himself to block Vibe’s one-on-one opportunity.
The game remained evenly balanced but it was the Championship outfit who opened the scoring when Woods’ cross from the right gave John Egan the simple task of converting from six yards out, taking his chance first time.
Gareth Ainsworth made nine changes at the interval, with only Luke O’Nien and the trialist on the right-side of midfield keeping their place, and there was almost a second goal for the Bees shortly after the break when Lewis MacLeod struck the post before the ball bounced safely into the arms of the substitute trialist keeper.
Wycombe’s trialist wingers combined well to give the right-sided player a sight of goal but it was blocked at source, before Maxime Colin dragged a shot wide as Brentford broke two-on-two just past the hour-mark.
Then the visitors came close when Philipp Hofmann’s looping header bounced just wide, before the equaliser came courtesy of Dayle Southwell who marked his first appearance at Adams Park with a simple but memorable goal.
The right-sided midfield trialist hit a stunning effort against the side of the post from 20 yards with the keeper beaten, but the ball stayed alive as it bounced into the path of Paris Cowan-Hall who lifted it to the back post. Southwell evaded his marker to nod it into the net and celebrated in front of his new fans in the terrace.
There was almost a winner when the trialist left-midfielder sent a back-post header just wide from a deep free-kick, but the draw was a fair result for both sides and marks another step forward for the Chairboys in their preparations for the new league campaign.
