Report: Wycombe 0-0 QPR

22 July 2016

Wanderers held Championship opposition to a draw for the second time in a week, matching Queens Park Rangers in a 0-0 stalemate at Adams Park.

Early chances were few and far between but Adebayo Akinfenwa showed he has skill on the ball to add to his physical strength, displaying some neat touches in the opposition box to threaten a breakthrough.

Darnell Furlong almost broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when he shifted onto his left foot inside the area and bent a shot past the trialist keeper, but Michael Harriman was in the right place at the right time to acrobatically clear it from danger.

Akinfenwa’s first sight of goal was a back-post header from Joe Jacobson’s inswinging corner but he couldn’t keep it down to threaten returning visiting keeper Matt Ingram, before Aaron Pierre was forced off with an injury and replaced by a trialist.

There were no further chances before the break and a flurry of substitutions affected the attacking flow in the second period, although Ben Gladwin’s low deflected strike almost snuck into the corner for the visitors.

Sam Wood’s rasping first-time effort stung the palms of Ingram after the Chairboys regained possession high up the pitch, and then Luke O’Nien struck a half-volley from 25 yards which fizzed a yard wide of the post with the hosts gradually getting on top of their higher-placed opponents.

With seven minutes to go, Anthony Stewart’s header was blocked and sparked a mini-scramble before the Hoops cleared it off their own goal-line, while a hopeful long-range effort summed up QPR’s frustrations at being able to seriously test either Wycombe keeper with the score ending a respectable and justified 0-0 draw.
