Gareth Ainsworth has backed Alex Lynch to fill the gloves left by Matt Ingram's departure to Queens Park Rangers.Homegrown goalkeeper Ingram joined Sky Bet Championship side Rangers on Friday night, but Gareth is confident Lynch can make the step up to be Wycombe's number one.
He said: "Alex knows he has got an opportunity to show people and show me he is capable of being our number one. He is going to get his chance in the team and you take your chance when it's given to you.
"This is why we train, this is what we do, this is being a professional footballer.
"You don't want anyone hiding in the shadows all of their career. Many keepers have gone on to be great number twos and threes - I can't see Alex doing that.
"He wants to play, he has a fantastic personality, kicks the ball very well and in the hands of Barry Richardson I am more than confident Alex can be a top keeper."
The 20-year-old has made six competitive appearances between the sticks for the Chairboys, with four of those being in front of the TV cameras.
"He's going to have to get used to no TV cameras being there but he's got a chance," Gareth added. "He has worked very hard on his fitness and his strength this season. He has always been a year behind Matt, but most people are because he is that big and got that many games under his belt.
"Alex has already shown some great stuff in the play-off games, in the Leeds game, the Carlisle game and the Aston Villa game. He is very competent. He'll be missing his mate but there is always an opportunity to take and that opportunity is Alex's to step up."
