Gareth Ainsworth says his squad has been stretched to the limit by a growing injury list, leaving him with 14 available players for Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie with Bristol City. The Chairboys take on the Championship side at Adams Park three days after losing three players to injury during the opening day of the Sky Bet League Two season at Crawley Town.
Myles Weston sustained a groin injury whilst Luke O’Nien and Michael Harriman were both forced off the pitch with knocks, adding to the list of names in the treatment room which already includes Paul Hayes, Paris Cowan-Hall, Danny Rowe, Nick Freeman and Max Muller.
Ainsworth said: “I’ve not known luck like it in my time as manager – injuries are part and parcel of the game but I’ve got about 40% of my squad missing after the first day of the season.
“With a fully-fit squad we know we are a match for any team in the division so it’s vital we get everyone back fit quickly to be able to perform to our full potential.
“This is a challenge, and we tackle any challenge head-on, but it’s just one we could do without right now.
“What we have got is a group of players who will give 100% every time they step across that white line, so I have full confidence in whoever wears the shirt and sometimes these situations can provide opportunities for other players to prove what they’re capable of.”
