Wycombe had most of the running but could not break down a stubborn Yeovil defence as they played out a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night.
Goalkeepers Ryan Allsop and Artur Krysiak came out on top as they made a string of saves for both sides as Wanderers lost ground on their play off rivals.
Gareth Ainsworth made one change to the starting line up from the 1-1 draw with Barnet on Saturday, with Jerell Sellars coming in for Max Kretzschmar, and Danny Rowe also made a welcome return to the substitute’s bench after missing out in recent weeks due to injury.
The first opening of the game fell to the visitors on 10 minutes, as full back Connor Roberts snuck in behind Sido Jombati and fired in a shot which Ryan Allsop was more than equal to.
The on-loan keeper was called into action again on 18 as former Reading and Middlesbrough striker Leroy Lita broke free of Anthony Stewart’s challenge, but his low shot was saved and Allsop stopped the ball before it squirmed over the line.
Aaron Pierre was a whisker away from getting on the end of a Garry Thompson flick from a Sellars free kick on 23 and Paul Hayes had thought he had given Wycombe a cheeky lead after nicking the ball out of keeper Artur Krysiak’s hands, only for it to be ruled out and the skipper having his name jotted down in the referee’s book.
Michael Harriman then skewed a left foot cross from the left wing and it almost snuck in at the near post but Krysiak was alive to it and pushed it round the corner as Wycombe came to life at the end of the first half.
It was all square at the break but the Chairboys came straight out of the blocks in the second half.
Marcus Bean stung the palms of Krysiak with a left footed effort from the edge of the box and Thompson flicked an effort goalwards from the resulting corner, only for it to be deflected wide as the home side tried to find the breakthrough in front of the terrace.
Lita, who was alert all evening and didn’t give Stewart or Pierre a moment’s rest, capitalised on a slip from Stewart on 52 to bear down on goal, but the centre half did brilliantly to recover from his mistake and block Lita’s effort, and Blues keeper Allsop came to the rescue again as he pulled out a stunning save high to his right to tip a Ryan Dickson effort over the bar on 55.
Harriman found some space on the edge of the box, cut inside on to his left foot but scuffed his shot on 65 and the Glovers almost got lucky on 78 as Pierre’s clearance ricocheted off a Yeovil man but luckily flew over the bar.
Two big chances fell in the space of a minute as both sides came close to breaking the deadlock. First Pierre met a corner with a towering header at the back post. His effort looped over Krysiak but was superbly headed off the line by Yeovil skipper Dickson.
The visitors then broke swiftly down the right flank and it was full back Roberts who made the run to the near post, but he was a whisker away from connecting with a drilled cross.
Harriman cut inside again in injury time on to his left foot, this time his shot found a way through a sea of legs and forced Krysiak to dive low to his right to push it away.
Substitute Marc Laird had a glorious chance to win in for the visitors with virtually the last kick, as he met a cut back from fellow sub Ryan Bird but dragged his shot wide when it seemed easier to score.
Both sides had to settle for a point though as we enter the final three games of the season.
