Gareth Ainsworth is thrilled to deliver the news that Chairboys fans have been hoping for – an extension to the contract of Luke O’Nien, keeping the midfielder at Adams Park until 2019.
The 21-year-old has excelled in his first season with the club since joining from Watford last summer, scoring five times in 40 appearances including crucial winning goals against Yeovil, Bristol Rovers and Stevenage.
O’Nien has signed a new three-year deal and his manager says the former Wealdstone loanee is a big part of his plans going forward.
Ainsworth said: “From the first day Luke came in to train with us last summer, I knew I wanted to make him a Wycombe Wanderers player, and he’s exceeded our expectations for a young man in his first proper season as a professional.
“Luke’s a real role model for youngsters wanting to make their way into the game with the way that he applies himself on the training ground, on the pitch on a matchday and also around the place with team-mates, staff and supporters.
“He’s got an infectious bubbly and positive personality and does everything with a smile on his face, but most importantly he’s proven he’s got a fantastic work ethic and a lot of ability which could take him a long way in the game.
“We’re delighted to keep him here for another three years and I’m excited about the extent to which his career can develop during that time.”
O’Nien said: “This place is home to me now and I never had any doubts about wanting to stay here. I’ve loved every minute from the first day that I came into training and everyone made me, my friends and family feel welcome.
“I’m enjoying my football and I’m learning every day from my team-mates and the coaching staff, and I’d like to particularly thank the gaffer, Richard Dobson and Barry Richardson for the hard work they put in to help me improve my game.”
