Wycombe Wanderers Ladies are up and running for the new season with a superb 5-3 victory over Andover New Street Ladies. On Sunday 6th September, Wycombe Wanderers Ladies made their debut in the Southern Region Women’s Football League for the 2015/16 season after winning promotion from the Thames Valley Counties League.
The Ladies faced Andover New Street, a team finishing mid-table in the Southern Region last season, and Wanderers fielded a large team, with a lot of new and exciting signings making up the starting 11.
Wycombe started extremely strongly, and showed straight away that they were out for the three points. The strong start from Wycombe seemed to take Andover by surprise, and after a few chances went begging, a wonder goal from Christina O’Connor soared in from the right wing to give Wycombe the lead after less than 10 minutes.
Christina continued to work well with Emily Holmes in the middle in order to create more chances in front of the Andover goal. The opposition never looked too threatening in this half and defenders Char Bagshaw, Kim Bignall and Jordan Goddard did an excellent job preventing any Andover chances, and keeper Emma Klima was on fantastic form for any shots that did get through.
Wycombe’s next goal came at 35 minutes, when a through ball from Holmes fell perfectly for Alicia Povey to pick up and lob the keeper to make it 2-0. The half ended with Wycombe in front and with a lot of positives to take forward.
The second half started and it was clear that Andover did not want a repeat of the first half. Although Wycombe kept the ball well, they were unable to create any chances as quickly as they could do in the first half. Around 10 minutes into the half, a long through ball undid the defence and the Andover striker was able to slot it past the onrushing Klima. The goal seemed to kick the Wycombe Ladies into gear, and with some fresh legs upfront in the form of substitutes Emma Neuberry and Hayley Brooks, the team pressed on the opposition goal.
Some great work from Ellie Searle led to a beautiful shot which somehow hit both posts before coming out, but the lucky escape for Andover was shortlived, as another O'Connor wondershot was batted away by the keeper only to be picked up by Wycombe striker Emma Neuberry who slotted into the back of the net.
Wycombe continued to press high up the pitch and made more chances. Unfortunately, an unlucky pass between defenders was intercepted by an Andover striker, and they were able to slot the ball in. Again, the Ladies' reaction was to take possession and keep it.
The midfielders worked tirelessly to supply the three at the top, and allow them to take chances on goal. The score stood at 3-2 and Wycombe knew that they needed to step up their game to keep their three points. Some more great work from Searle, Brooks and Neuberry led to another goal for the Ladies finding its way into the back of the net. Andover didn’t give up though and managed to find their way once more through the defence to get their final goal of the game, making it 4-3. It was not to end there, however, and in the 86th minute of the game, Molly Brooks waltzed through the Andover defence and grabbed her debut goal, giving Wycombe the final score of 5-3.
