Chairboys secure striker signing

15 June 2015

Gareth Ainsworth has kicked off his summer recruitment in style with the capture of forward Garry Thompson on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old has agreed a move to Adams Park having scored 12 times for Notts County in League 1 last season, and previously starred for Bradford City in their spectacular run to the Carling Cup Final in 2013, finding the net against Arsenal in the quarter-final.

Ainsworth said: “Garry is a fantastic professional who will score goals and bring a new dimension to our attack, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to sign him.

“He’s got great experience, he’ll be an important character around the dressing room and his record speaks for itself in terms of what he’s achieved in his career.”

Thompson – who can play either in attack or wide midfield – started his career with Morecambe and scored in the Conference play-off final in 2007 to help the Shrimps win promotion to the Football League, making more than 300 appearances in total for the north-west club.

He moved to Scunthorpe United the following year and linked up with current Chairboys captain Paul Hayes, with the pair playing an influential role as the Iron won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

After four years at Glanford Park, Thompson switched to Bradford and enjoyed a dream first season, starring in the side that reached the Carling Cup Final and won promotion as he scored in the play-off semi-final and assisted two goals at Wembley.

The attacker was transferred to Notts County last summer and scored a hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Crawley in September before finishing the season as the club’s top scorer, but left Meadow Lane at the end of his contract.
