Report: Basingstoke 1-3 Wycombe

28 July 2015

Wanderers' pre-season preparations gathered pace with a commanding 3-1 victory at Basingstoke Town on Tuesday night.

Marcus Bean, Anthony Stewart and Ryan Sellers were on target for the Blues before David Ray notched a consolation for the National League South side in the second half.

The visitors created the better chances throughout and could have led early on when Sellers scuffed his effort from Michael Harriman's deep cross, while Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Bean both tested home keeper Aaron Howe.

Basingstoke's stopper did well to deny Paul Hayes and Aaron Pierre and Sellers were both denied on the line from the resulting corner, but the pressure paid off when the next set-piece met Bean who converted from close range for his first goal in Wycombe colours.

A trialist midfielder hit the target with a well-struck shot before Pierre and Sellers again came close from excellent deliveries from Joe Jacobson, and the lead was doubled soon into the second half when Anthony Stewart received the ball outside the box with his back to goal, rolled it past the defender and found the bottom corner with his supposedly weaker left foot.

Two became three when Sellers crashed home the goal of the game, seeing his right-footed strike bounce down off the crossbar and into the net, and he almost had another when his looping header from Sido Jombati's deep cross landed just over the bar.

Max Kretzschmar forced a smart save from Howe with a stinging drive before three substitutions from the visitors appeared to distract the defence as they switched off from a corner, allowing David Ray to steal in and tap home a consolation for the Dragons.

Sellers again tested Howe with a well-hit free-kick before the game petered out with the result never in question, leaving the Blues with one pre-season friendly against Aldershot to overcome before the league campaign begins against York City on Saturday 8th August.

The clash with Basingstoke also saw Matt Ingram complete 90 minutes as he reaches the end of his recovery from the injury he sustained on the final day of the regular league season in May.

Team: Ingram, Jombati (O'Nien 64), Jacobson (Trialist 64), Stewart, Pierre (Rowe), Harriman (Banton 76), Trialist (Bloomfield 64), Bean, Sellers, Hayes (Kretzschmar 45), Amadi-Holloway.

Unused subs: Wood, Thompson.
