Gareth Ainsworth says the club have only just started on the path to success as he looks ahead to the beginning of the 2015/16 season. The Chairboys face their first pre-season friendly against French side US Avranches on Thursday evening and Ainsworth says he and his squad are ready for the challenges ahead, having enjoyed a superb campaign last year which culminated in a play-off final at Wembley in May.
“Last season is nothing but a huge success for me,” he said. “There’s no hangover (after losing on penalties at Wembley) – you could say we’ve just had our first drink. We’ve just started.
“It’s taken a couple of years to get going and it probably took me 18 months to get my team and my philosophies in place. Managers need time and I think there have been 81 clubs who have changed manager since I came in here, which is crazy.
“Now we’re in this zone where this is the true way that Wycombe Wanderers will be playing under me. I’m really excited to see what we can become.
“We’ll have a small squad again, we’ll be huge underdogs again, but that’s a great tag to have. The loan market will be key for us and we’ll need patience from the fans for me and my staff, but I’ll be doing the best I can and I know I’ve got the chairman right behind me. There’s nothing we won’t do for this club.
“Thank you so much to everyone for their support last year. It was a fantastic season and I want to recreate some of those feelings. We do have a target and we’ll come out with that soon to let people know what we’re aiming for.
“Please get behind us again and I for one can’t wait for it all to begin.”
