Gareth Ainsworth has confirmed his team have set their sights on promotion as they approach the final third of a season that has exceeded all expectations so far.Having surpassed the pre-season target of 55 points with 15 games still to play, the Blues boss and his players have now pledged to pursue a place in League 1 after maintaining a position in the top three for most of the campaign, despite having one of the smallest squads in the Football League.
Safe in the knowledge that survival has already been achieved, Ainsworth is ready to contend with the bigger clubs in the division knowing that his side’s ambitions of promotion can now be considered realistic.
He said: “Whilst we have surprised many people this season, we strongly believed that investing time in the squad would give us the chance to unlock some great potential. The depth of commitment has resulted in a resilience that has helped turn the club around from surviving on the last day of last season to becoming genuine promotion contenders.
“By achieving League 2 security, the lads have earned the right to have a real shot at promotion. Whilst the club’s financial security is top of the agenda, risks on the playing field can now be taken.”
Chairman Andrew Howard said: “Gareth and his team have done an incredible job at pulling together such a close-knit and competitive group of players. The aim was always survival, but the camaraderie and passion shown by everyone means we can now realistically push on to higher things.”
