Gareth Ainsworth has proved his ambition of achieving promotion from League 2 with the capture of two exciting talents from Championship side Brentford.Creative attacker Sam Saunders and ball-playing midfielder Nico Yennaris have both joined on loan for one month, and go into the squad for the visit of Stevenage to Adams Park on Saturday 28th February.
31-year-old Saunders played a key role in the Bees’ promotion from League 1 last season, scoring five times before injury ruled him out of the run-in, having moved to Griffin Park from Dagenham & Redbridge where he won promotion from the Conference in 2007.
Yennaris began his career with Arsenal and captained the Gunners to the Premier Academy League title in 2010, as well as starring in the Next Gen Series three years later. The 21-year-old – who has represented England at three different youth levels - switched to Brentford after short loan spells with Notts County and Bournemouth, and played for the Bees’ first-team as little as two weeks ago in a Championship clash with Charlton Athletic.
Ainsworth said: “We have taken our time in the loan market to ensure we could bring in the highest possible calibre of player, and I think we’ve achieved that with Sam and Nico.
“They’re both excellent footballers who bring another dimension to the squad and they’re looking forward to being part of our efforts towards winning promotion.
“We have an excellent relationship with Brentford which enables this type of deal to happen, and once again we’re grateful for their support in allowing us to bring these two players to Adams Park.”
Nico has been given squad number 4, while Sam will wear 7. The pair’s loan deals expire on March 29th.
